海をテーマに制作された二枚目のアルバム。本作は三年に渡るワルシャワでの生活が終わりを迎える時期に作られたものである。
彼が海に興味を持ち始めたのは、休暇中に訪れるバルト海に面したグダニスクの街の影響が大きい。海岸を散歩していると海を見つめる人の姿に目が留まった。
その目は海だけでなくもっと多くのものを見つめているように見えた、と彼は言う。
海を見つめるとき、人は何を想うのだろうか。その発想は海に対する想いへと繋がり、どこまでも続く大きなこの存在のもとに流れる静寂と共に、音楽の制作を進めていった。
本作のタイトルでもある she was the sea を筆頭に時に感情的にピアノは奏でられ、最終曲の太田美帆の歌声がエピローグとして優しく聴く者を向かい入れる。 -
This is Yokoyama's second album on the theme of the sea. It was made at the end of a three-year stay in Warsaw.
His interest in the sea began when he was on holiday in the city of Gdansk on the Baltic Sea. He was strolling along the beach when he noticed people gazing at the sea. Their eyes, he says, seemed to be looking at more than just the sea.
What do people feel and think when they gaze at the sea? This small question led him to a deeper thought about the sea. Then he started to make music with the silence that flows under this endless and magnificent existence.
His piano playing is sometimes quiet, sometimes emotional, as in the title track of this album, "SHE WAS THE SEA".
The final track, sung by Miho Ota, closes the album with a gentle embrace of the listener.
